Observations / Stories:
- Vast number of referrals from happy families (they tell their friends)
- When the PNA conference group met in member’s homes – in our living rooms – refreshments provided
- 1st NAPNAP meeting held with AAP in Miami about 1975. We were wined and dined by the pharmaceutical reps. It was an exciting time in PNP history as we were just starting to be recognized nationally and locally. There were many challenges getting my role established and getting the doctors to accept the concept of job sharing. Many of us PNPs were young mothers also.
- A recent move has shown me how far PNPs have come in Minnesota. The excellent collaboration with and respect of physicians – should not be taken for granted – it took a lot of work to build
- For many years we met monthly in homes of our colleagues. We relied on each other for education
- From a preschool mom after a (new patient) well child exam, "I don't think any of my children have ever received as thorough an exam as Mary [sic youngest of 5] has received today. Every child should see a nurse practitioner at least once so that parents could see what a terrific job you do....from now on we will see nurse practitioners whenever possible."
How Things Have Gotten Better:
- Prescribing privileges
- Increased patient acceptance and knowledge of our role
- The Minnesota Chapter is RICH with outstanding leaders and mentors
- Much larger group now – more recognition in the community most people have hears of nurse practitioners, even if they hare still unsure of our background or exact role
- Larger participation, increased legislative involvement
- Prescription writing
- Payer, DHS, MA acknowledgment of collaborative practice
- Role gaining acceptance
- Salary much better, prescriptive writing has made practice much easier, am more independent
Who Has Influenced You The Most:
- Mary Chesney: outstanding contributions to PNPs and children.
- Cynthia Hobbie: has exemplified professionalism, PNP political involvement and NAPNAP leadership, and superior mentorship. Believed in me and encouraged me to expand my skills and experiences. What a role model! So many of us have been influenced by her in some sway. What a good role model and mentor to many. I can’t imagine how she has done all she has professionally and managed her family responsibilities.
- Linda Lindeke: continues to give so much to the chapter, PNPs and children, models the best integration of practice-education-research and professionalism, a mentor who helps people strive to be the very best they can be.
- Peggy Gilbertson: long commitment to children and NAPNAP
- Pat Zajac: unbelievable commitment to children and NAPNAP so many roles at the same time-editor, program chair – What an effort and tremendous talent
